So many things in life do not have labels, so many milestones and tragedies are yet to be identified by a single concept, at least not yet. Monica VanWart’s work is frequently titled ‘Untitled, for now’. This hesitation to commit to a name and thus consider something complete is reflective on the artist’s exploratory and uncertain relationship with others and the world. Houses, divided into uneven colorful patterns, are built by VanWart’s commitment to creating a place that is all hers, a place that may some day hold a family, that may someday bring a satisfaction that she is looking for. But, for now, she will compose a colorful reality of possibilities. That future she is seeking may be possible, but not yet.
